Shell Helix Ultra engine oil with PurePlus Technology

Made from Natural Gas

Shell Helix Ultra with PurePlus Technology is a fully synthetic engine oil providing ultimate performance for your engine.

Shell PurePlus Technology is a revolutionary process that produces a cleaner, purer form of base oil, the main component of car engine motor oils. By converting natural gas into crystal clear base oil, Shell’s patented technology process creates an oil that’s 99.5%1 pure and keeps your engine performing like new.*

"Shell Helix is the only oil which I trust to deliver ultimate engine performance."

Why Shell makes PurePlus

Global engine technology has made huge advances in recent years and car manufacturers demand higher performance levels from car engine oils. This has created a general market move towards synthetic oils (lower-viscosity oils of consistently high quality). Shell is always searching for ways to bring new and improved technology to our motorcycle and car engine oils. That’s why we make Shell Helix Ultra with PurePlus Technology.

How it works

The base oil makes up most of the lubricant and determines its fundamental properties. Shell PurePlus Technology creates base oils with stronger molecular1 bonds when compared to traditional base oils made from crude oil. This process is used to create Shell Helix Ultra, an engine oil that's 99.5% pure, enabling the highest level of performance by protecting against deposits, wear and corrosion - providing long lasting engine performance.

In addition, we add Active Cleansing Technology to the Shell PurePlus Technology base oil, resulting in Shell Helix Ultra. The Active Cleaning Technology forms the heart and soul of the lubricant, preventing deposits on moving parts and enhancing fuel economy, all while working in harmony with the base stock. The unique combination creates a motor oil like no other, keeping your car engine closer than ever to factory clean.

How are Shell Helix Ultra’s base oils made?

Using Shell PurePlus Technology, Shell turns natural gas into our most advanced base oil for lubricant oils.

Extraction

Natural gas is extracted from the ground.

Gasification

Methane from natural gas reacts with pure oxygen to produce synthesis gas.

Synthesis

Synthesis gas is fed through a reactor and converted into a liquid called Syncrude.

Hydrocracking

Syncrude is fed into a hydrocracker, a unit that breaks down molecules to form new ones.

Gas to Liquids (GTL) Products

The new molecules are distilled into GTL products, including PurePlus base oils.
